PEFC launches certification search facility

21 November 2007

The Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes (PEFC) has launched a new service to enable customers to search the status of certificates listed in its database.

The web-based service enables those with an interest in certification and chains of custody to search the validity of such documents, with certificates listed under valid, suspended, withdrawn, expired and other, non-PEFC recognised.

Under the new system, certificates whose validity expires are automatically removed from the valid status list.

PEFC said this had resulted in the area covered by its certificates being reduced to 199 million ha, but secretary-general Ben Gunneberg said that it was necessary in order to provide customers with “current and accurate information”.

“Although it is tempting to chase hectares and chain of custody volumes, it is essential for the long-term credibility of forest certification to ensure the accuracy and validity of the status of issued certificates,” said Mr Gunneberg.

“PEFC is committed to providing customers with current and accurate information on all certificates and we are delighted to be offering this new service.”

The PEFC Council recently launched a new strategy to develop certification rules and standards, which it described as “more relevant to actual issues directly applicable to the needs of the supply chain”.
