5 October 2010

Malaysian timber industry representatives have expressed concern over the impact of a possible listing of three key wood species on a danger list of tress threatened with extinction, according to the International Tropical Timber Organisation’s latest market report.

It follows a report by the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s which says keruing, meranti and kapur may be threatened with extinction.

The species would need to undergo further investigation before appearing on the group’s Red List.

The Sarawak Timber Association has stated that listing of the species would have a severe impact on the state’s timber industry.
