Rain screen a clear winner
6 August 2012Lonza Tanalised Clear pressure-treated timber has been used to create a rain screen system that curves around part of the Gateway section of a major redevelopment at Durham University.
The western red cedar rain screen covers the walls of the building, designed as both an attractive and sustainable feature, and to prevent water getting into the structure of the building.
Paul Trelease, managing director of contractor Barclay Roofing, said the treatment, which also protects against fungi that can stain or discolour wood, helps retain the colour and keeps the timber looking cleaner for longer.
"We were asked to use western red cedar because it is an attractive and versatile timber that doesn't split and has a long life, however, it can discolour quickly," he said.
