Scientific study "proves" timber's environmental claims

Timber industry calculations demonstrating the environmental friendliness of wood construction have received scientific confirmation.

The study, which validates timber industry claims, was carried out by the Finnish Environment Institute and VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland.

It examines questions associated with lifespan calculations of the environmental impact of construction materials, such as the binding of carbon into wood structures, metal recycling and materials’ use after buildings are decommissioned.

Wood as a construction material consumes much less energy and natural resources than concrete and steel, as well as producing much fewer greenhouse gas emissions, it says.

The report underlined the importance of lifespan thinking in the selection of building materials.

“The calculations unambiguously demonstrate that wood use is environment-friendly,” said Antro Säilä, director of the Finnish Forest Industries Federation’s business environment and innovation unit.
