Scottish mill invests in kilns and land

Two extra kilns installed at James & Sons’ Mosstodloch sawmill significantly increases capacity at the site.

The company has also purchased additional land next to the mill to allows for timber storage expansion and for any future capacity expansion.

The Mahild kilns, with a capacity of 340m3 per week, will mean James Jones will be supplying more timber with a moisture content below 20%, which reduces the weight of the timber, equating to five less truck journeys from the mill each week and four tonnes less of CO2 emitted each from haulage operations.

“This is allowing us to meet the increasing demand for kiln-dried timber, in particular for our agricultural fencing range where our 15-year warranted, kiln-dried and treated, redwood posts and strainers are becoming more and more popular with customers wanting peace of mind,” said Neil Snedden, James Jones’ general manager for the northern mills.

The new kilns, which bring the total of kilns at Mosstodloch to six, have two-way entry, allowing material to be loaded and unloaded in either direction. New covered areas adjacent to the kilns have been created, protecting undried timber waiting for kilning and the dried timber once it has left the kilns.
