Second Accoya road bridge built in Holland

26 November 2010

The second heavy road bridge to be made out of Accoya modified wood has been moved into position in the Dutch town of Sneek.

The bridge, which peaks 21m above the A7 highway and measures 32m long by 8.5m wide, was installed on the evening of November 20 and follows the construction of a similar earlier bridge in 2008. It is able to support the heaviest load class of 60 tonnes.

Accoya was specified as the bridge material by project designer Oak Architects in the €10m A7 upgrade scheme.

The bridge had to be as sympathetic to the natural surroundings as possible as the upgrade runs alongside a complex canal network between lakes in an area of outstanding natural beauty.

Oak Architects deemed timber to be the optimal choice for the Sneek upgrade because of its aesthetic qualities.
