Self-build house imitates a tree

26 November 2005

A house designed to imitate a tree has been erected using engineered I-joists.

Self-builder Will Anderson's Tree House in London has also been fitted with Excel Building Solutions' Warmcel 500 product to provide high thermal insulation performance.

The house, which features a green oak sole plate, glulam beams, Scandinavian triple-glazed timber windows and western red cedar cladding, used James Jones & Sons Ltd's JJI-Joists for the structural frame.

All the timber used carries Forest Stewardship Council certification, apart from a few glulam beams, which are certified by the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes, and reclaimed teak flooring.

The 220mm-deep walls deliver a U-value of 0.17W/m2K, twice as good as Building Regulations requirements.

The build project was handled by Koya Construction, with Sudbury-based Ridgeons supplying timber frame components and Swedish Timber Products providing the windows.
