Shining design wins Timbmet pavilion competition

25 November 2013

A design that harnesses the power of the sun has won this year’s Timbmet Dan Kemp Memorial Pavilion competition.

Launched in 2010, the competition is run in conjunction with Oxford Brookes School of Architecture and challenges students to explore the creative and structural possibilities of wood.

Chris Waters' winning design is based on sun paths and views from within the pavilion looking out. The judges were particularly impressed with the concept and the apparent "lightness" in the design model, which will now be scaled up to full size and exhibited at Ecobuild 2014.

This year's brief was to design a 'flatpaxton' kiosk/pavilion to reflect an in-depth study of the 'ghosts' of Crystal Palace Park. The students had to research and explore the park to choose a location for their design and the resulting pavilion had to house the results of their discoveries and recordings of the surrounding site, as well as a refreshments kiosk.

This year a competition for postgraduates was also included, with the students asked to design a small garden work space. Winner Gavin Fraser created a timber tower with an almost woven effect for the walls.
