Sikkens takes on royal task

24 June 2008

Sikkens’ Rubbol Satura paint has been used to rejuvenate a former Royal Navy victualling yard in Plymouth.

The solvent-borne satin opaque finish has been used to renovate external doors and windows of the existing buildings as part of a multi-million pound redevelopment of Royal William Yard. It has been combined with Sikkens’ Onol primer and has been applied in a range of colours from grey to tawny brown.

The South West Regional Development Agency is renovating the 16-acre site in order to open it up to the public, businesses and residents, following the Royal Navy’s withdrawal in 1992.

“Rubbol Satura was specified for its durability, its ability to hold and retain colour, and to withstand the climatic environment as the yard is right on the coast and is exposed to the effects of sea and spray,” said Andy Johnstone, from contractor Tamar Decorators.

“We used these colours to emulate the character and history of the buildings. And in doing so, we have transformed and enlivened the appearance of the doors and windows to fit in with the rest of this prestigious project.”

The first phases of the eight-year redevelopment are due to open by the end of 2008.
