Spanish chestnut timber producer achieves carbon first
26 October 2013Spanish chestnut timber products manufacturer Maderas Siero has become the world’s first company to have the carbon footprint of its products independently verified as meeting the NEPCon Carbon Footprint Management Standard.
The company used the standard to measure the carbon footprint of 1m3 of its chestnut board, accounting for emissions from the forest through to point of sale. NEPCon verified the carbon footprint as 383.8kg CO2eq, which NEPCon says is lower than emissions from 1kg of orange juice sold in the UK.
The Forest and Wood Technology Research Centre provided Maderas Siero with technical assistance.
"Certification with NEPCon allows us to communicate our carbon footprint results confidently to our clients and investors," said Martínez Prieto, Maderas Siero deputy director.
Maderas Siero produces chestnut boards, planks, solid beams and poles and fencing, while its sister company makes laminated profiles, blockboard and laminated beams.
