Summit unites timber industry leaders

28 September 2012

A summit uniting timber industry leaders from across the sector kicked-off this year’s Timber Expo.

Under the headline of “one vision one voice”, Pro Timber 2012 was attended by representatives from the British Woodworking Federation, Confor, the Timber Decking & Cladding Association, Timcon, TRADA, the Timber Trade Federation, UKSIPS, the UK Timber Frame Association, Wood for Good, the Wood Protection Association and the Wood Panel Industries Federation.

Informed debate centred on the presentation of two pieces of commissioned research from consultancy Lychgate involving interviews with more than 50 architects and main contractors.

The two studies included the specification and perceptions of timber and an up-to-date review of the tactics employed by the steel and concrete sectors.

It then addressed how the timber sector can respond, target markets for growth and reinforce its position within the construction market.

Delegates heard contractors are still using concrete and steel as a preferred material due to a ‘comfort zone’ of reduced risk compared to timber.

Contractors are also keen to see stronger product manufacturing and sub-contracting offerings within the timber sector, with provision of comprehensive technical, manufacturing, installation and maintenance support.

Full findings and copies of the report will be circulated to all the supporting trade associations over the next few weeks. For more coverage on Timber Expo see ttjonline or the October 13/20 issue of TTJ for an in-depth feature on what exhibitors were showing.
