Support climbs for stair scheme

1 October 2012

The British Woodworking Federation has gained 19 new members for its Stair Scheme and is now estimated to account for 70% of the UK timber staircase industry.

The surge in new members, which were mostly SMEs, followed a decision by the Timber Staircase Association to encourage its members to sign up.

Michael Smith, director of David Smith St Ives, said: “Standards and regulation in the stair market remain highly subjective, but by working together through the BWF we can start to address this by agreeing a consistent industry approach.”

The BWF Stair Scheme was begun two years ago and is associated with loading, deflection and fire safety.

“This is particularly important in helping us to push the market more actively for timber stairs in common flight and fire critical environments,” said BWF chief executive Iain McIlwee.
