22 December 2008

Six trucks of suspected illegal timber have been seized in the Mabira Forest in Uganda.

The interception of the vehicles was a joint operation between police and the Uganda Timber, Charcoal and Firewood Association (TCFA). .

According to Mpimbaza Hashaka, the TCFA national coordinator, the latest action brings to 21 the number of truck loads of suspect timber seized by police in the last three weeks.

"Illegal activities have been increasing, but with the intervention of our timber tracking team we expect it to reduce," he said.

He added that, when arrested, the illegal logging suspects have tried to bribe their way out of trouble. He also alleged that some government officials "connive" in the illegal activity in the Mukono, Wakiso and Mpigi districts.

"We need to counter corruption to safeguard our natural heritage," he said.

Four people were arrested after the latest truck seizures, but were later released without charge.
