Sustainable Canadian forest products guide launched

21 October 2008

The Forest Products Association of Canada (FPAC) and PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) have published a free buyers’ guide for sustainable Canadian forest products.

A Buyers’ Guide to Canada’s Sustainable Forest Products is designed to make buyers question products beyond the traditional rationales of price, quality, service and availability. It covers topics such as climate change, traceability, certification, legality and social desirability, and provides information to consider when penning procurement policies.

It recommends buyers evaluate the full life cycle of forest products, from production through to usage and disposal, in order to ensure they are purchasing the most sustainable forest products and safeguarding their own environmental credentials.

“Beyond the immediate and obvious consequences of their purchases, consumers, retailers, investors and communities are taking an increased interest in how their buying decisions will affect the environment for future generations,” said Bruce McIntyre, leader of the PwC forest, paper and packaging practice in Canada and co-author of the guide.

“We want to help make those choices by providing them with solid information on Canada's environmental credentials when it comes to forest products."
