Timber features in this year’s Stirling Prize winner, announced in London on Saturday.

The prestigious award went to Maggie’s Centre London which features birch-faced plywood interior panels, Siberian larch cladding and European oak furniture. Designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, the building was also recognised as London Project of the Year.

The Stephen Lawrence Prize, which honours projects with a budget of less than £1m, was awarded to Simon Conder Associates for El Ray in Dungeness. The house, also shortlisted for this year’s Wood Awards, features a Steico I-joist frame and Kerto beams, external cladding and decking in FSC-certified louro and internal wall linings, floors and joinery in FSC-certified birch plywood.

The RIBA Client of the Year award, also announced on Saturday, was presented to all six shortlisted entries, including the Kielder Partnership, which commissioned the Kielder Observatory in Northumberland. Designed by Charles Barclay Architects, the timber-rich building features Douglas fir columns, European whitewood, and Siberian larch cladding.
