Timber goes extreme at Ecobuild

24 December 2010

Extreme Timber is the title of one of the feature attractions at the Ecobuild sustainable construction exhibition at ExCeL in London from March 1-3.

Sponsored by engineered timber specialist Pasquill, the exhibit focuses on the use of glulam in large-span structures.

The display will highlight both the material’s technical performance and its “spectacular” design possibilities. The latter will be highlighted by a “hyperbolic parabloid” structure featuring curved and twisting glulam frames, one inverted to form a roof.

The display will also focus on glulam’s sustainable benefits over rival materials, citing the lower energy required in its manufacture compared to steel; with one tonne of glulam having 650kW/h of embodied energy and a tonne of steel 15,600kW/h.
