Timber lobbies to save FCE

5 April 2013

Confor and the Woodland Trust have combined to co-ordinate a new push to save Forestry Commission England from a merger with Natural England and the Environment Agency.

The organisations brought together 17 signatories to a letter to the environment secretary Owen Patterson calling on him not to proceed with the merger. The appeal came from across the industry as well as a spectrum of people keen to protect and promote England's trees, woods and forests.

The letter, which appeared in the April 3 Daily Telegraph, said the Commission was important as a body to focus on the threats and opportunities to English forests.

Signatories included the principals of the Timber Trade Federation, Timber Packaging & Pallet Confederation, Wood Panel Industries Federation, British Woodworking Federation and the UK Forest Products Association.
