Timber pavilion puts Serpentine in a spin

21 July 2007

The Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2007 is to be a timber-clad “spinning top” that will be “spectacular and dynamic” and offer views across Kensington Gardens in London.

Designed by artist Olafur Eliasson and architect Kjetil Thorsen, the structure is to be clad in birch plywood supplied by Wisa Wood Products and will also feature fir and spruce elsewhere in its construction.

Timber is to be used in the spiral ramp that will wind around the pavilion to offer views across the gardens, with the colour scheme proposed to be a dark natural wood finish.

The wood elements of the 400m2 pavilion are to be constructed by Switzerland-based NÜSSLI International Ltd. It is due to be opened in August.

The Serpentine Gallery Pavilion will be the second timber-heavy temporary structure erected in London this summer following Bad Hair, the Architectural Association's summer pavilion that was built with Finnforest’s Kerto LVL.
