Universal secures eight-way FSC chain of custody

1 October 2008

Michigan-based Universal Forest Products has achieved Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) chain of custody certification at eight of its facilities in the US.

The company’s plants in Ranson, West Virginia; Windsor, Colorado; Chandler, Arizona; San Antonio and New Waverly in Texas; Woodburn, Oregon; and Thornton and Riverside, California have achieved the certification.

The multiple site certificates were awarded after a third-party assessment by Scientific Certification Systems.

“Demand for FSC-certified lumber has increased, and we’re ensuring we’re well-positioned to answer that demand and meet our customers' needs,” said vice-president of marketing Dick Gauthier.

“FSC certification is a great distinction that will help drive our business.”

Universal has 90 facilities across North America, recording sales of more than US$2.5bn in 2007. It engineers, manufactures and markets wood and wood products for the domestic and commercial sectors.
