US hardwoods find going tough in 2009

Latest figures from the US Census Bureau reveal the impact of global recession on American hardwood exports in the first nine months of 2009.

Total global sales of US hardwood lumber were 29% lower than the same period of 2008 at US$651m, while veneer sales fell 40.7% to US$180m. Lumber exports to the EU were 34.7% down at US$164m, while veneer exports fell 51.3% to US$62m.

The biggest EU market for US hardwood lumber was Italy, with imports of 87,075m³, followed by the UK with 44,541m³ and Germany with 29,878m³.
