US timber exporters report bumper year

21 December 2010

US timber exporters are on course to record their best year in a decade, according to industry newsletter Random Lengths.

Southern pine exporters have performed well due to increased shipments to Haiti to serve the rebuilding effort following the devastating earthquake there in January.

Exporters have also achieved more success with species in North Africa, the Middle East and China. Volumes to China also experienced significant gains, while markets in Japan, South Korea and Taiwan also registered substantial increases.

Favourable exchange rates are widely seen as helping US exporters in 2010.

The increased offshore sales have helped many North American producers compensate for weak domestic demand.
