Wood Awards shortlist illustrates timber’s versatility

A cross-laminated timber wedding venue, an expandable plywood pavilion, the new Mary Rose museum and a surfboard made from macrocarpa feature in this year’s Wood Awards shortlist.

The 30 shortlisted projects, announced today, have been selected from 318 entered for the UK's premier award scheme celebrating excellence in design in wood.

Other projects in ithe shortlist include the Abraham Darby Sports & Learning Community, which features CLT and tall glulam columns; the restoration of the Royal Society of the Arts; a small CLT studio in the shadow of The Shard; and 16m of continuous landcape furniture in Latvian birch plywood with seating for 80 people.

The winners of the Wood Awards, including the coveted Gold Award, will be announced at a ceremony at Carpenters' Hall in London on November 19.

The shortlist will be showcased for the first time at 100% Design at Earls Court, London from September 18-21;and at Timber Expo at NEC Birmingham from September 24-25.

The awards are sponsored by AHEC, Canada Wood, the Carpenters' Company, TRADA and Wood for Good. Other sponsors include American Softwoods, BRE and the Forestry Commission.
