Woodlands Timber fined

30 September 2004

A Shropshire timber company has been fined £4,500 after an employee lost a finger in a circular saw accident.

Shrewsbury-based Woodlands Timber Products, which makes fencing panels, admitted breaching the Health and Safety at Work Act during a hearing at the town's magistrate's court.

The court heard the employee's finger had to be amputated after being cut by the saw.

The Health & Safety Executive's prosecutor Lyn Spooner said the employee had not been trained to use the saw and there were no physical measures to prevent it being used by unauthorised staff.

However, the company was said to have an excellent previous safety record and the employee had been told not to use the saw.
