28 February 2013

A worker at the John Gordon & Sons sawmill in Nairn died after being caught in machinery.

Police and the Health & Safety Executive are investigating the death of Peter Ord, 40, from Nairn, who was pronounced dead at the yard on Wednesday morning. The Northern Constabulary described it as an industrial accident.

Gordon Timber employs 90 people at the yard. It produces wood for construction, fencing and packaging, and last year marked its 150th anniversary.

Joint managing directors Ronald and Scott Gordon said: "We can confirm that an incident has taken place this morning which has tragically resulted in the death of an employee.

"Investigations are taking place and therefore it is not appropriate for us to comment further at present. Our thoughts are very much with the gentleman's family."

An HSE spokesperson said: "We are aware of the incident and are making preliminary enquiries. We have nothing further to say at this time."
