Young guns talk up timber careers

14 April 2008

Careers specialists have been educated on working in the timber industry by four twenty-somethings from across the trade.

Marcus Power, from Jewson Internal Timber Supply (JITS); Sarah Jenkins of Premier Forest Products; Helen Morgan, also from JITS; and Matthew Whitehead, from Forestry Commission Wales took the opportunity to tell attendees at a recent careers adviser event about their experiences of the timber trade and how they came to be involved.

Arranged by The Timber Trade Federation's Education, Training and Careers committee and hosted by JITS, the event was attended by 14 design technology teachers and careers advisors.

Representatives from the Institute of Carpenters, SCA Timber Supply and JITS also took the opportunity to promote careers in the timber industry.

"Entrants to the timber and wood products sector may come from many and varied backgrounds, but once in the trade they stay with us and progress in their careers," said David Whitehill, general manager at JITS.

The next careers adviser event is due to take place at BSW Timber's site in Cargo, Cumbria on April 15.
