Cornish sawmill closes doors

16 February 2017

A Cornish sawmill has closed after being unable to compete with cheaper imported timber.

Crocadon Sawmill in St Mellion which advertised itself as selling “English oak and native hardwoods from a traditional Cornish sawmill”, was set up by forester Mike Mann in 2002.

An online auction of woodworking equipment, timbers and furniture was due to be held on February 16-23 by Husseys. A statement on the sawmill website also said changes to the farm where the sawmill was based had led to it relinquishing its tenancy and becoming redundant.

There has been a sawmill on the Pentillie estate on and off for over 100 years. Timbers up for auction included oak beams, sweet chestnut, Western red cedar, elm, yew and London plane. Wadkin, Robinson and Maggi machines were among the machinery inventory.
