Plaut races to 90th anniversary party

20 November 2017

Timber import agent Plaut International celebrated its 90th anniversary with a day at Doncaster Races for customers and suppliers.

The East London company trades internationally in timber, plywood, timber components and finished products.

Managing director John Yates said the firm, formed by German entrepreneur Albert Plaut to trade veneers and plywood, had added doors, DIY products and more recently speciality windows to the business.

At the event, Mr Yates gave a short history of the company for guests, including one instancy of piracy, when a boat and its cargo of plywood and hardwood were taken about 50 years ago in Singapore.

What was a serious moment for the company (insurance didn’t cover this at the time) ended well as customers supported the company with fresh orders. It also resulted in marine cargo insurance being changed for all companies.

In the 1980s, a management buyout gave a leading role to the current Plaut chairman – Eddie Lindenberg.
