Wood protection nets gain approval

14 August 2014

Germany has given the go-ahead for the commercial use of a new non-spraying method to protect timber piles in the forest that the developers say is 70% cheaper than conventional liquid insecticides.

Storanet is a net coated with an insecticide designed for covering or wrapping timber piles. The fibres are treated with a coating from BASF that controls the amount of insecticide available on the surface of the net.

Storanet uses eight times less active ingredient than conventional treatments and can be used in some conservation areas, where spraying is highly restricted, and be safer for operators and the environment.

"The nets retain their efficacy for six months, can be reused up to five times and can be disposed of in an environmentally compatible way," a BASF spokesman said.

Storanet has received registration for commercial use in Germany. It is already registered in Switzerland and further approvals are expected this year in Sweden, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria and Slovenia.
