The Strategy for England’s Trees, Woods and Forests aims to highlight the importance of the natural resources in helping the environment adapt to climate change, how they enhance urban environments and how sustainable management creates a strong market for woodland services and products.
“This strategy shows how we can meet the challenges and opportunities of making our trees and woodlands productive, healthy and attractive,” said Barry Gardiner, minister for biodiversity, landscape and rural affairs.
“What we want to see is the right trees in the right places, where they can contribute most in terms of environmental, economic and social benefits.”
However, the Confederation of Forest Industries has said that the strategy does not do enough to make forest management economically viable and does not recognise that “environmental and social sustainability cannot truly be achieved without economic sustainability”.
The Forestry Commission, Nature England and a number of other environmental organisations are to work together to deliver the strategy.
