ICF welcomes new president

The Institute of Chartered Foresters (ICF) has elected Professor Julian Evans as president. He was previously vice-president.

Prof Evans, an ICF fellow, is a professor of forestry at Imperial College, London.

During his career he has also held the role of chief research officer for the Forestry Commission at Alice Holt, he is the author of many technical books and a past editor of the ICF's journal, Forestry.

Prof Evans has chaired two UN inter-sessional conferences on the future of planted forests, is vice-president of the Commonwealth Forestry Association and, in 1997, was appointed OBE for services to forestry and the third world. He has long-term research interest in plantation sustainability in Swaziland, and silviculture of broadleaved woodland in the UK.

He is aso a woodland owner, with a 12ha site in Hampshire.

Joining Prof Evans on the ICF council is new vice-president David Henderson-Howat, deputy director of Forestry Commission Scotland (FCS); and Syd House, FSC conservator - Perth and Argyll.
