Taylor Maxwell hosts PEFC to present Responsible Timber Sourcing CPD

20 February 2020

Taylor Maxwell made their London Bridge architects showroom available to PEFC to present their CPD session to a gathering of architects on the benefits of using certified timber in construction.

The presenter was Charlie Law from Sustainable Construction Solutions who provided a detailed overview of all the timber certification schemes in the UK including PEFC, FSC and Grown in Britain to an audience of 26 Architects from; Architecture PLB, dRMM Architects, Forge Architects and Upchurch Associates.

“For Taylor Maxwell the seminar was part of a wider drive within the timber industry to improve the message to architects and specifiers that using timber within construction is both  sustainable and increasingly desirable,” said Tony Shelton of Taylor Maxwell. “There is still a vacuum of understanding on timber sourcing and Chain of Custody processing amongst specifiers , our responsibilities as simple  providers of timber must  go beyond  supply and into education and product development . Robust , sustainable supply chains that demonstrate clarity and credibility create the trust required to push an increase in the use of timber products.”

At the end of the CPD workshop, participants had a better understanding of the background to forest certification; the UK timber market; sources and the market drivers for certified timber; requirements of the UK government’s timber procurement policy – CPET (Central Point of Expertise on Timber) and how the two global certification schemes compare; what a model timber specification clause looks like; how chain of custody certification works, and the requirements of project certification.
