The Idaho-based company, which also operates a building materials distribution division, said sales were up 18% in 2013 to US$3.27bn.

The wood products manufacturing division reported a 7% increase in net plywood prices in 2013, while LVL and I-joist prices were up 6% and 9% respectively. Plywood volumes rose 9% but LVL and I-joist volumes increased by 22% and 24% respectively.

Boise said the wood products business’s EBITDA was up 33% to US$106.3m (2012: US$80.2m). The jump was driven primarily by higher sales and prices.

Higher plywood sales were driven by the acquisition of two plywood plants in September last year.

"The housing industry in the US improved in 2012 and 2013, and we remain optimistic that the improvement in demand for our products will continue," Boise said.

But it said its plywood prices were about 10% lower at the start of 2014 compared with a year ago.
