More than 100 members were canvassed and the results compared favourably with those of 2004, with only one major injury to an employee reported over the two years. Incidents of major injuries to non-employees were reduced from four in 2004 to three in 2005.

Meanwhile, the BWF has developed a Technical Guidance for Timber Stairs to provide advice on appropriate stair specifications for manufacturers across the UK.

The British Standard (BS 585) for Wood Stairs has been declared obsolete and the European stair standard is being developed, and Mr Lambert said the BWF publication will fill the gap in the mean time.
