A growing number of value-added wood manufacturers are springing up in Canada in a bid to stay in the lucrative US market but without paying crippling softwood lumber duties.
Value-added activities on Vancouver Island are focused on two main areas: sawmills converting logs into high grade lumber and specialised timber products; and remanufacturers using rough lumber to make products including cabinets, decking, doors, windows and fencing.
