A timber release plan authorised by Australia’s Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) and VicForests has stated that no logging will be carried out in central Victoria.
VicForests took over the management of the Wombat and Wellsford State Forests in July, leading to fears from environmentalists that they would be logged. However, the DSE has stated that logging activity will be focused on the eastern part of the state.
“VicForests had the opportunity to manage the commercial operations in the western part of the state, which included some small operations near Horsham, Koondrook and Bendigo,” said DSE’s Peter Appleford.
“They chose not to do that, so this timber release plan only specifies areas in the east of the state.”
