Forest Stewardship Council-certified karri decking has been supplied by Clarks Wood Company Ltd to the Cardiff Bay development at Penarth.

Bristol-based Clarks Wood said the karri bearers and decking had to meet stringent visual strength grading inspections for the project, which will feature shops, restaurants, a sports complex and an Olympic size swimming pool, to be used to train athletes for the 2012 Olympics.

The South African plantation grown karri also had to meet a tight shipment requirement and arrived on time for installation by carpentry company Houston Cox.

Geoff Osborne, Clarks Wood managing director, said finding the correct timber species for demanding architects was not easy.

He said: “It is impossible to carry stock of many lesser known species in anticipation of a project, so prompt response and reliable information is what is required.”
