The Somerset branch of Jacksons Fencing has suffered a serious fire in its kilning facilities.
The blaze, which started in the early hours of this morning, hit the Chilcompton site of Jacksons in a building used for kiln drying timber.
Multiple fire crews and an incident support unit from Yeovil attended the scene, where the building partially collapsed.
Crews had earlier managed to remove some of the rail-mounted trolleys of timber.
“The cause of the fire is currently under investigation and has resulted in 40m² of direct burning to the building and contents,” said Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service.
Richard Jackson, managing director of Jacksons Fencing, said the company’s operations director had travelled down to the site this morning to assess the damage. But he said arrangements had been made to temporarily outsource kilning to a third party in order for normal service to continue.
Jacksons Fencing, founded in 1947, is based at Ashford in Kent and has a further branch in Tattenhall near Chester.
