One of the original architects of the Buildbase chain has joined south-east builders merchants Buttle plc as joint managing director.

Kevin Middleton was recruited by the Grafton Group in 1990, where he helped launch Buildbase. As managing director for 12 years, he oversaw the growth of the latter from a single site to number three in the UK heavyside building products sector.

More recently he was made managing director of Grafton Merchanting GB, where he was responsible for closer integration of the group’s UK businesses, which also include Jackson Building Centres and Hendricks Lovell.

He resigned from Grafton to pursue other interests last Septmber.

Fellow joint managing director Peter Buttle said that Buttle’s had been a “relatively small company with a big personality for some years” . Mr Middleton’s new role would be “to take it forward”.
