A project promoting sustainable woodcarvings in Kenya has achieved Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification.

The WWF initiative, the first FSC certification in Kenya, uses farmed neem instead of threatened hardwoods and has secured the livelihood of 3,000 carvers on the country’s east coast.

WWF said the project is unusual in that it certifies wood from small farms for craftsmen rather than the common FSC certification of large-scale, commercial timber production to supply the timber trade and well-known DIY stores.
