The UK market for garden rooms and buildings declined by 14% to an estimated £110m in 2010, according to a new report.

The report by AMA Research says 2011 is also set to be a difficult year in the market, but future prospects are more favourable in 2012-2015 as the economy comes out of recession and, it is hoped, returns to growth.

“The volume of units sold is estimated to increase at a lower rate than the increase in the value of the market and is forecast to reach approximately 30-32,000 units in 2015 – up over 15% on current volumes,” it said.

AMA said falling numbers of housing transactions, as well as the economic conditions, hit the lower end of the market in 2010, particularly log cabins and the high-end timber frame buildings.

Modular garden rooms also declined but the sector performed better than other products as the number of homeworkers increased.
