A US Forest Service plan to log part of the Daniel Boone National Forest in south-eastern Kentucky has drawn criticism from environmental groups.
But the service maintains that the logging on 12,500 acres in the Redbird area is intended to improve the forest and wildlife habitat, as well as providing timber.
It says the forest is “overcrowded”, with too many trees competing for nutrients and moisture. Cutting trees, it adds, will allow remaining ones to grow stronger.
