Nearly half of Poland’s forests are now PEFC certified only a year after the first PEFC certificate was issued in the country.
PEFC Poland chairman Krzysztof Jodlowski reported an “unprecedented” demand for PEFC certification.
He said the demand was not surprising as PEFC was the only forest management standard that had been developed by local stakeholders in a participatory process.
A further growth in PEFC certified forests is expected in this year, in both the public and private forest owner sectors.
Mr Jodlowski said Polish timber companies should be interested in taking advantage of the international recognition that PEFC certification offered now that sufficient volumes of Polish PEFC-certified timber were available.
