Dutch property development company Heijmans has announced its commitment to limit the use of timber in all new projects exclusively to sustainable timber.
The company’s decision is also applicable to projects where the use of sustainable/certified timber is not a prescribed requirement.
Heijmans said it would absorb the additional costs of the move, which will involve the use of FSC or PEFC-certified timber but not wood certified by the Malaysian Timber Certification Scheme.
Heijmans’ activities cover property development, residential building, non-residential building, installation engineering and infrastructure. The company operates in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany, with sales of €2.7bn in 2010.
