The Indonesian government proposes to sign memorandums of understanding (MOU) with the European Union and Japan to help check illegal logging in Indonesia.

Under the planned MOUs, the EU and the Japanese government would ban the entry of illegal logs from Indonesia into their respective countries.

Indonesia’s Ministry of Forestry is auditing local timber companies to ensure their logs are not from illegal sources, and under the MOU the government will provide a list of companies licensed to export logs.

Last year Indonesia signed a similar agreement with China, Malaysia and the UK.
