German sawmilling giant Klausner is temporarily cutting production at its Wismar plant.
The company said the decision was a response to a drop in international lumber sales, as well as high raw material costs.
The scaling back at Wismar will involve the introduction of short-time work for six months starting on November 1, with a gradual reduction in production.
Klausner said the move would strengthen its competitive position in the difficult economic conditions.
