The Port of Ipswich has handled one of the largest shipments of timber in its history, with 9,400m³ of Canadian timber discharged from the vessel MV Orfea.

Shipped by Buchanan Lumber Sales from Ontario to Woking-based Price & Pierce Softwoods Ltd, the cargo featured around 3,000m³. of treated timber. Price & Pierce said it had been able to carry out quicker deliveries by distributing the material straight from the quayside.

Buchanan purchased MV Orfea specifically for use on the run from Canada to Ipswich. Associated British Ports (ABP), which owns and operates the port, said it hopes the vessel will now make regular calls at Ipswich.

“This new trade through Ipswich demonstrates the wide array of products that we are able to handle at the port,” said port manager for East Anglian ports Alastair MacFarlane.
