The company is one of seven UK divisions of Laidlaw Interiors Group, which went into administration in December.

Its primary manufacturing sites are Langley Mill and Mansfield (309 and 82 people employed respectively), with an office in Barnstaple (23 employees) and a small number of individuals based at other Laidlaw Interiors Group locations across the UK.

Of the 426 people employed by Leaderflush Shapland, 394 have been notified of redundancy with 32 retained by administrators to assist with the wind down of the company.

Fifteen individuals within the group’s head office function at Langley Mill have also been affected, with 10 being notified of redundancy and 5 retained.

“It is with regret that we announce the closure of Leaderflush Shapland today,” commented Richard Hawes, partner at Deloitte and joint administrator.

“Despite the best efforts of the company, and ourselves, it was simply not possible to secure a buyer for this division.

“The Group has been under financial pressure for some time, restructuring in 2014, and Leaderflush Shapland has suffered significant on-going losses making trading unsustainable.”

Iain McIlwee, British Woodworking Federation chief executive, said the impact of losing a brand like Leaderflush Shapland would be felt across the joinery industry.

"It is the families that we must think of first," said Mr McIlwee.

"I am sure stories will emerge over the coming weeks and months that will give us greater insight and perhaps some lessons to learn, but right now it is the impact on the communities that is most upsetting. Beyond this, it stands as a reminder that whilst we may see headline growth in construction, the benefits of this growth are not always shared equally or in a timely fashion through the whole of the supply chain."

All Leaderfush employees received December payments, and the administrators are liaising with Jobcentre Plus to ensure that all those affected are assisted with submitting their statutory claims to the Redundancy Payments Office.

Buyers have been initially secured for four of the divisions within the Group (Longden, Fitzpatrick, Komfort and Cubicle Systems).

The administrators also continue to try and secure buyers for the remaining two divisions; Laidlaw Architectural Ironmongery and Balustrading Solutions, both based in Willenhall.
