A US sawmill with a 75-year history has announced it will be ending production soon before a full closure in 2027.

Marks Lumber, a family-owned sawmill based in Clancy, Montana, will end sawing operations on 6 November 2026 as it prepares for a full closure in 2027.

The company’s decision marks the closure and orderly wind-down of the business. Reasons for the closure include retirement, incredasing costs, and difficulties with log availability from forests.

The company will stop accepting new special-cut orders from 20 October 2026 and will cease production shortly afterwards.

Marks Lumber intends to continue serving customers from its existing inventory for the remainder of 2026 and throughout 2027.

The final closing date will depend on when the company sells through its finished stock.

The company’s product range includes Douglas fir circle-sawn flooring and siding, timbers, trim and fascia, tongue-and-groove materials, landscape supplies, fencing products, and firewood.

No reason for the closure was given beyond the description of the process as retirement and an “orderly conclusion” to the business.

Marks Lumber expressed gratitude to employees, customers, loggers, foresters, truckers and vendors in its statement.

The company also thanked organisations such as the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation Forestry and Trust Lands Division, the US Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management.

The company said: “We are proud of the business we have built and deeply grateful for the relationships that have made this journey possible”

Marks Lumber’s final closure date will be confirmed after remaining inventory is sold.
