The online documentation system, introduced in September, replaces the old paper licences which NGOs said were easily forged and fuelled the illegal logging trade.

The Brazilian government also announced that the rate of deforestation had already dropped 11% as a result of the new system, based on satellite images.

But law enforcement via the online logging database also appears “seriously flawed”, said Greenpeace, as the data was not yet easily accessible.

Marcelo Marquesini, of Greenpeace Brazil, said he was worried that no internet or Autrotac system (a satellite system installed in inspectors’ cars, offices based on roads and police barriers) has been set up in remote parts of the Amazon or on many roads.

The Brazilian government announced last year tht 63% of the wood produced in the Amazon was believed to be illegal.
