A new training and skills website has been launched, targeting both timber companies and young people considering a career in the sector.

The Wood Skills Academy (www.woodskillsacademy .co.uk) has been created by the timber sector skills council Proskills as part of its work to devise a new training strategy, careers and qualifications structure for the industry.

Developed through close liaison with Proskills’ wood industry board (WIB), which includes representatives of companies from across the sector, the website has sections on apprenticeships, and how to set them up, a ‘course finder’ link, which enables companies and prospective trainees to find specific training programmes to meet their needs, and a ‘wood skills ladder’. The latter provides descriptions of the range of jobs available in timber and the skills needed.

The site also includes information on accessing training funding, plus news and events sections.

Proskills has also been working with an industry qualifications reform group to devise new NVQs for timber.
